President Obama believes that earning a postsecondary degree or credential is essential to both creating career pathways for students and developing a strong, robust middle class. This is why he established the north-star goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020. To achieve this target, we must focus on underserved students who are the fastest growing demographic group, but also have the lowest rates of college attainment.

AANAPISIs, and other postsecondary institutions that enroll populations with significant percentages of undergraduate minority students, play a critical role in this 2020 goal. Eligible AANAPISIs target this demographic group by serving almost 40 percent of the nation’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) student population, and are predominantly community colleges. AANAPISIs support low-income AAPI students in ways that matter most – retention, graduation, language access, and mentoring. In FY16, we anticipate making approximately 13 awards, investing up to $350,000 per institution, per year, for five years.
