What are Limited Submission Opportunities?

Limited submission programs restrict the number of proposals, applications or nominations an institution can submit to a funding agency.

These programs require institutions to conduct an internal solicitation and review process in which deans and directors of organized research units (ORU) nominate pre-proposals for internal review. A review committee chooses the proposal(s) that will go to the funding agency.

Announcements about Limited Submissions

Research Development Services (RDS) notifies faculty members about limited submission opportunities in two ways:

  1. Calendar of limited submission opportunities

RDS maintains a calendar of limited submission opportunities via the campus online competition management system. (See "Go to InfoReady Review" at the top of this page.) This calendar is not exhaustive; it includes only opportunities most likely to be of interest to investigators at UC Merced.
  2. Email announcements

RDS also sends email for the announcement of newly opened internal limited submission competitions.

How to Apply for a Limited Submission Opportunity

Identify the internal deadline for submitting a pre-proposal for a specific opportunity on InfoReady Review

Prepare the competition-specific documents, and submit an online application prior to the internal limited submission deadline.  Standard documents may include:

  • One- to two-page project description with estimated total budget
  • Two-page curriculum vitae

Submit your project description, budget, and CV via the online competition management system.  The application will be reviewed by RDS for eligibility and completeness, and forwarded to the dean of your school or ORU director by the internal deadline listed on the calendar.

An applicant will be nominated by default to submit a proposal on behalf of the university for any competition where only one application has been received via InfoReady Review.  Please contact RDS should you be interested in applying to a competition after the internal submission deadline has passed.  In this instance, the first applicant to express interest and apply via InfoReady will be nominated by default to submit a proposal behalf of the university.

Internal Selection Process

The dean or ORU director conveys her or his nominee(s) for an opportunity via the online competition management system. RDS electronically routes these recommendations to a designated ad hoc review committee. The committee evaluates the proposals and chooses the number specified to submit to the funding agency. RDS will notify applicants of the review outcome shortly after receiving the committee's decision, but well in advance of the sponsor's submission deadline.

Selected candidates/P.I.s prepare complete applications or proposals. They must follow both university and sponsor guidelines for the final submission. Applicants must submit their proposals through the Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) and all appropriate campus approvals.
